After much struggle and searching, I found this page: http://www.debianforums.com/ftopic3087.html, which told me exactly what was going on. With it, I gained sound, wifi, and probably firewire too. I still have to, each time the machine boots up, do:

modprobe ieee80211
modprobe ipw2200
ifdown eth0
ifup eth1

before everything is working, but that is small hassle compared to having no wifi at all!
